The Gifted Education Programme (GEP) Extensive Reading Programme (ERP) is a series of 3 lists (P4, P5 & P6) that are updated yearly.
The titles consist mainly of classics, award winners (Newbery & Caldecott medals in particular) and the occasional bestseller/popular title. The titles cut across all genres, although there is a deliberate linkage to the year’s theme (e.g. The P4s contains more fairy tales while the P5 list contains more mystery stories).
These are excellent lists for parents who want to buy/borrow books for their children but are concerned about poor language/weak content (especially in some popular titles). For example, The Dork Diaries and Captain Underpants series contain language/content that some parents may consider inappropriate.
There are some other details on the book lists but only the titles/authors should be of general interest. You can find many of these titles at the National Library.
The list of titles for 2019 is more than 50% shorter than that of 2018. Only a few new books have been added. Many of the books removed are hard-to-find titles.
